Heating Help Is on the Way: WV Mails LIEAP Applications Starting Nov. 2, Up to $2,000 per Household
West Virginia will begin mailing Low Income Energy Assistance Program applications Nov. 2. Benefits top out at $2,000 per household, funding is first-come, first-served, and the deadline is Nov. 25.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The mornings are getting frosty, the furnace is kicking on, and for a lot of West Virginia families that means one thing: worrying about the heating bill. Here’s some welcome news to share around the kitchen table. The state’s Low Income Energy Assistance Program, better known as LIEAP, opens its next round of help in just a few days.
The West Virginia Department of Human Services, through its Bureau for Family Assistance, announced Friday that it will begin mailing LIEAP applications on Monday, Nov. 2, 2026. The maximum benefit is $2,000 per household, money that can make a real difference when the cold sets in across our hills and hollows.

Who gets an application in the mail? According to the department, applications are being mailed to households that received regular LIEAP benefits during the previous season and that also have a child under age 6, include an adult age 60 or older, or include an individual with a disability.
The deadline is Nov. 25. Pre-LIEAP applications must be in by Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2026, the day before Thanksgiving. Applications can be returned by mail, dropped off at a local DoHS office, or completed online at wvpath.org.
Don’t wait on this one. The department says funding is limited and is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, so households are encouraged to apply early. If you’ve been meaning to help Mom, Mamaw, or the neighbor down the road with paperwork, this is the week to do it.
What you’ll need: Anyone whose main heating source is a utility regulated by the Public Service Commission must include a current utility bill. Households that heat with bulk fuels must send verification of their fuel supplier along with a receipt. The department also sets household income limits for the program for federal fiscal year 2027, and your local DoHS office can tell you where your family stands.
Questions? Folks can contact their local DoHS office, call the Office of Constituent Services’ Client Services Unit at 1-800-642-8589, or email [email protected].
West Virginians have always looked out for one another when the weather turns hard. If you know someone who could use a hand staying warm this winter, pass this along. That application could be the difference between a cold house and a warm one come January.
