STATESBORO, Ga. — It was a long Saturday for Marshall football.

Georgia Southern rolled to a 49-13 win over the Thundering Herd at Allen E. Paulson Stadium, a Sun Belt road loss that left both teams at 5-4. A crowd of 24,023 watched the Eagles seize control after the opening quarter and keep scoring the rest of the night under overcast, 76-degree skies.

Georgia Southern quarterback Max Johnson was the difference. He completed 19 of 26 passes for 271 yards and four touchdowns and added a 16-yard scoring run of his own early in the fourth quarter.

Jeremiah Ware was Johnson's top target, finishing with 94 receiving yards and two scores — a 23-yard catch in the first quarter and a 45-yard strike late in the third. Alex Taylor hauled in a 70-yard touchdown, and A. Greene added a 1-yard scoring catch after halftime. T. Cummings also ran 16 yards for a touchdown in the fourth.

Marshall answered early. Georgia Southern jumped ahead 14-0 on Ware's opening score and a pick-six, when C. Calicut intercepted a Z. Turner pass at the Marshall 24 and returned it for a touchdown. Running back Jo'Shon Barbie answered right away with a 45-yard touchdown run, and J. Nicolas added the extra point to make it 14-7 after one quarter.

That was as close as the Herd would get. Johnson hit Taylor for the 70-yard score in the second quarter, then found Greene and Ware again in the third. Johnson's rushing touchdown and Cummings' 16-yard run pushed the lead to 49-7 before Marshall found the end zone again.

Khalil Wilkins provided the Herd's other highlight, breaking free for a 66-yard touchdown run with about seven minutes left. The two-point try failed, and the score stayed 49-13.

Marshall actually piled up 412 yards of offense, including 250 on the ground, and matched Georgia Southern with 21 first downs. Barbie led the rushing attack with 83 yards on 12 carries. Tyrese Woodgett added 41 yards on six attempts, and Owen Sweeney had 46 receiving yards. Wilkins also went 2-for-3 for 21 yards through the air.

The problem was the other side of the ball — and the turnovers. Georgia Southern finished with 454 total yards, 287 of them through the air, and did not throw an interception. Marshall threw two, including the first-quarter pick that went back for six, and punted seven times.

The final quarter-by-quarter read told the story: Marshall 7-0-0-6, Georgia Southern 14-7-14-14.

It is a tough result for a Herd team that came in looking to stay in the hunt in the Sun Belt East. Fans back home in Huntington and across West Virginia will want to see a sharper start and cleaner football next time out. For now, Marshall sits at 5-4 after a night when big runs could not keep up with Johnson and a Georgia Southern attack that found the end zone seven times.
