Charleston Police K-9 Maco Retires After Nearly 12 Years of Service
Charleston Police Department K-9 Maco is retiring after nearly 12 years of tracking suspects, working crime scenes and mentoring new K-9 teams, and he'll stay home with his handler.
After nearly 12 years on the job, one of Charleston's most dependable officers is heading home for good, and he's earned every belly rub coming his way.
The Charleston Police Department is celebrating the retirement of K-9 Maco, a longtime member of its K-9 unit. Over his career, Maco worked crime scenes, helped officers track down and apprehend suspects, and pitched in on drug seizures, leaving a real mark on the capital city.
In a social media post honoring him, the department called Maco "a tremendous asset to the Charleston Police Department's K-9 unit" and said, "His presence on the road will certainly be missed."
Maco didn't just do the work himself. The department credited him and his handler, Sgt. Petty, with helping mentor new K-9 teams, passing what they learned on to the dogs and officers who will carry the unit forward.
And the best part? Maco isn't going anywhere far. The department said he'll keep living with Sgt. Petty, where he can look forward to "plenty of treats, belly rubs and well-earned naps."
Police dogs like Maco spend years running toward the kind of situations most of us would run from. They search buildings, follow scent trails through the dark, and stand beside their handlers on some of the hardest nights on the job. For a K-9, nearly 12 years of service is a long and remarkable career.
Here in West Virginia, we know a thing or two about loyalty and hard work, and Maco showed plenty of both. From all of us: thank you for your service, Maco. Enjoy that couch. You've earned it.
